We've added a new feature over in the sidebar - a section for Upcoming Events. Now the schedule of events at the Community Center is just a click away.
What's the best part? If you are registered at Upcoming then you can add events, too. If your event is taking place at the Soldier Community Building, then search Upcoming for the appropriate venue (just type in 'Soldier Community Building'), add your event, and presto! It appears in the list on this page. Upcoming is a Yahoo property, so if you're already registered with a Yahoo mail account, you can log in with it.
Also, I wanted to publicly thank Vince Maniago for helping out with the implementation of this feature. Vince works with Upcoming and helped me to quickly troubleshoot a small problem with the implementation, allowing this to move forward quickly.

Soldier Water Tower Inspires Online Art
We use an occasional image of the Soldier water tower here on the Hometown News.
While browsing thru the "Iowa" group pictures on Flickr, I found a couple images of Soldier's water tower - one that appears as if it were taken on a bright and sunny day, and another that looks, well, different.
Turns out, the photographer (his name is Daniel Dunlap) was hunting for photo ops when he stopped in Soldier to get gas. On leaving the gas station, he noticed the water tower and decided that it would make a nice shot.
What really is neat, to me, though is what he did with the photo when he got it home - the modified shot (you did click thru on the link above didn't you?) is something spectacular. This image is the type of thing you see in advertising, in book illustrations, and just is spectacular.
A piece of art. And it was found right here in Soldier!

Letter To Friends Of Soldier
January 30, 2009
Dear Friends of Soldier,
As many of you know through family and newspaper articles, the Soldier Community Club is alive and providing family friendly events and life-long learning opportunities for the citizens of Soldier and the surrounding area.
A dedicated group of volunteers have taken the building into caring hands and have written grants to secure money for a new roof, and complete renovation of the lower level. This lower level will provide a Senior Center for our aging population, as well as the exercise room for seniors and anyone in the community.
The lower level will have two handicapped accessible restrooms with showers, a dining room, a complete kitchen and a large activity room with computers, 52" TV, Soldier history and possibly the Soldier Library.
The renovation of the entire building has a timeline to complete. Soldier's 125th Sesquicentennial will be held in 2013. The building will be the focal point of the activities being planned to celebrate this important milestone for Soldier. We hope all of you are planning a return trip to our fine town.
We have received a grant through the USDA Rural Development Program for over $70,000. This requires us to have a match of $19,000 to complete the work.
We have been holding fundraisers and received a grant from Monona County Community Partners Foundation for $4,000.00 which we can apply toward this match.
We are now asking for your help!
We hope you will see the importance of this project to our aging population of your families living here in and give back to Soldier with your donation.
Your donation will be tax deductible through the City of Soldier.
We are aware of the current economic situation that is affecting all of us. You would be amazed how even though it is a tough time for all, people in our community are giving of themselves toward this very important need.
Please take this opportunity to pay it forward! Soldier gave all of us a great start in life, and there is not a better feeling than giving it back.

Soldier's Community Club Update - New Official Web Source
It is with great excitement that we are announcing today the establishment of the Soldier Community Club Update. This will be the new home of all the official news from the Soldier Community Club, and your best source for the latest! Stop over for a visit, I think you will like the new, clean format and the thoughtful content that has been included.
The Soldier Community Club has become increasingly active and recognizable in shaping Soldier's sense of community and its hometown pride. The club has made great strides toward many goals in the past couple of years. A true "zero to hero" story, they started with nothing (or maybe a little less) and many hands have worked very hard to make it all come true.
In that time, the club has overcome several hardships that would have stopped any group with less team spirit, less organization, or less downright stick-to-it-iveness. But these people, this group of talented individuals, have been generous to a fault with their time, money, and other resources and they have persevered through it all with good humor (despite the occasional frayed nerve).
With all of this in mind and with an eye to the future and some very major opportunities to come in the next year or two (along with some fairly high hurdles), it is completely appropriate and maybe a little tardy, that the club have its own dedicated web news source. This new blog will be updated by any member who chooses to update it, on as frequent a basis as is necessary. And of course, much community club news will be featured on both Soldier's Hometown News and on the Community Club Update. For the "official scoop", though, Community Club Update is your source and you should bookmark the site or subscribe to the RSS feed now!
One last little thing: Does this mean Soldier's Hometown News is going away? No! As a matter of fact, this will allow us to do a little "face-lifting" of our own that is long overdue, without disrupting the club's publicity efforts. So stay tuned and see what changes are coming your way!

A Fresh New Face
The Soldier Community Building is facing the future with a fresh new look. As promised earlier, we have pictures. There are more to come, but here is a teaser, just to get you "in the mood". In the photo at left, a member stands outside the recently painted front entry, enjoying the evening breeze following the regular Tuesday club meeting.
Note the clean new look of the sign. Despite poor light, you can see that the front doors are painted in the same clean color scheme.
More pictures to come, including all the before/after shots, but in the meantime enjoy this one and, by all means, stop in and witness the progress first hand! A picture is worth a thousand words, but nothing beats being there.

WET PAINT
If you haven't been back to Soldier in a while, you need to visit the Community Building and look at the new paint job. If you recall the mural around the bottom of the building, you might also recall how aged and weather-beaten it had become. The aging, and the fact that it was outdated, called for action.
Your community club responded with action. They applied for and received a grant for paint from Diamond Vogel Paint and Keep Iowa Beautiful. Volunteers painted the foundation as well as the front entry and the sign. Along with cleaning up the garbage cage in front of the building, this all adds up to a wonderful face lift for one of Soldier's favorite landmarks.
More news, as well as pictures of the makeover "Before and After" coming soon! Speaking of pictures, come by for a visit and take your picture in front of a very fresh looking Community Center. Submit the photo to any community club member or email it to ehlerssa@loganet.net and you may see your picture in this space!
